One person was taken to local hospital after driving his vehicle into a large hole at a construction site in east-end Barrie, Monday night.

A police officer at the scene told BarrieToday that the male driver's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The crash happened around 9:45 p.m., July 24, on Duckworth Street near Howard Crescent.

The vehicle appears to have gone through construction fencing and then went head-first into the hole in the middle of the road.

Witnesses said the vehicle was travelling northbound on Duckworth. When they realized the driver wasn't slowing down, they went to the end of their driveway on Duckworth and said they saw the male driver continue to accelerate toward the construction site.

They said the vehicle hit a pile of dirt surrounding the hole, catapulting the car into the air, where it twisted and came to rest in the pit.

The crash scene is part of a large reconstruction project along Duckworth Street.

BarrieToday will have more information as it becomes available.
