Essa Township teens charged after vehicle break-ins

ESSA TWP. – The Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have laid charges after a concerned citizen called police regarding suspicious persons accessing parked vehicles in Essa Township.

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, shortly after 4 a.m., a local resident contacted the Nottawasaga OPP regarding two males observed going through vehicles in the area of Dunn Court [in Angus].

A detailed description of the suspects was provided and both were observed to have flashlights in their hands.

Police responded to the area and commenced an investigation.

As a result, two Essa Township residents are facing charges.

19-year-old Dakota Feltmate has been charged with: 

  • Theft Under $5,000 from a motor vehicle, contrary to s.334(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC); and  
  • Trespassing at night, contrary to s.177 CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford on July 30, 2020.

A 17-year-old male has been charged with:  

  • Theft Under $5,000 from a motor vehicle, contrary to s.334(b) CC; and  
  • Trespassing at night, contrary to s.177 CC.

The accused youth, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford in August 2020.

Recently, the Nottawasaga OPP has responded to numerous complaints of community members who have had items stolen from their vehicles. Suspects are rummaging through vehicles that are left unlocked during the night.

The Nottawasaga OPP is asking residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious people, vehicles or activity to police. Police would like residents to check their security cameras or dash cameras for video footage. If you have any information or video surveillance in relation to these thefts, please contact Nottawasaga OPP.

Nottawasaga OPP reminds residents to: 

  • Always keep your vehicle locked. 
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle.  
  • If you absolutely must leave valuables in your vehicle, do not leave them in plain sight.  
  • Ensure all windows and sunroofs are completely closed. • Don't leave your vehicle running or unattended.  
  • Don't keep personal documents in the vehicle, such as vehicle ownership, insurance slips, credit card invoices or other documents containing personal information.

When you contact Crime Stoppers you remain anonymous, you will never have to testify and you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2000.
