Family escapes house fire in south-end Barrie

'It did originate in the garage, but got inside the home, into the attic space and started to spread from there,' says Barrie Fire official

An afternoon fire at a south-end Barrie home left a family having to get out quick as crews battled the blaze.

Smoke from the scene on Kingsridge Road could be seen from a few kilometres away on the other side of Kempenfelt Bay.

Barrie Fire received a call about a garage fire in the area of Hurst Drive and Cox Mill Road around 1:30 p.m., Thursday, but when the first crew arrived, they determined the fire was going to extend into the home and called for more help.

“It did originate in the garage, but got inside the home, into the attic space and started to spread from there,” Deputy Fire Chief Ed Davis told BarrieToday around 2:30 p.m. “It affected quite a lot of the home itself, so there was quite a bit of damage and now we just have a crew looking for hot spots.

"But just minutes ago, actually, we can say we got it under control," he added.

At one point, Davis said there were about 20 firefighters with five apparatus on scene battling the blaze on Kingsridge Road.

The home was occupied at the time of the blaze, but there were no injuries.

“There was a family — mom, dad, two kids and a house cleaner — but they were all self-evacuated and didn't receive any injuries. Just a little shaken up,” Davis said.

The investigation is ongoing to determine the cause.

There was damage to some vehicles outside the garage, but whether they were the cause is not yet determined.
