A 19-year-old international student has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in Barrie's south end on Friday night, and another 19-year-old has been charged in connection to the deadly collision.

On Friday, July 21 at 10:15 p.m., city police responded to the report of a car hitting a pedestrian at Big Bay Point Road and Leggott Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, police say the pedestrian was located and pronounced deceased.

The investigation determined that the pedestrian was crossing from the south side of Big Bay Point Road to a plaza located on the north side when he was struck by the westbound vehicle.

The vehicle was located a short distance away at a plaza on the southeast corner of Huronia and Big Bay Point roads, where it had caught fire.

The driver, a 19-year-old Barrie man, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and failure to stop after a collision causing death.

He was held for a bail hearing and released from custody on Saturday afternoon. The accused is scheduled to return to court on Monday, Aug. 28. Due to a court-imposed publication ban, Barrie police say his name cannot be released.

Officers with the Barrie police traffic unit closed the area of Big Bay Point Road between Huronia Road and Leggott Avenue until just before 4 a.m., Saturday, for the on-scene investigation.

"The circumstances which resulted in the death of the pedestrian continue to be the focus of the ongoing investigation and police are requesting the assistance of the public," police stated in a news released Monday.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or may have dash-cam video and were travelling on Big Bay Point Road on Friday night prior to 10:15 p.m. to contact Det. Const. Douglas Avery at 705-725- 7025, ext. 2647.
