A Barrie man has been charged with impaired driving after police say he swerved onto a home's front lawn, struck a pole and then made his way home last night.

Just after 10 p.m., June 21, a suspected drunk driver was reported to Barrie police by a concerned citizen who had spotted the vehicle go off the road on Penetang Street, hit a pole and then continue to a residence in the area of Cundles Road East and Daphne Crescent.

When officers arrived, they found the vehicle parked in the driveway with what appeared to "fresh damage" to the front-left corner.

Officers requested a breath sample from the suspect driver, who showed signs of impairment.

Police say the 30-year-old Barrie man refused and was arrested for failure or refusal to comply with a demand, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, failure to remain at the scene of a crash, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Barrie on July 5.

The man's vehicle impounded for seven days and he has had his driver’s licence suspended for 90 days.

"The Barrie Police Service wish to thank the concerned citizen who not only called police about the actions of the driver, but also for the keen observations made with regards to the driver’s behaviour," police stated in a news release Thursday.

None of the allegations against the accused have been tested in court.
