A former Barrie man who was convicted earlier this year of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter will find out in October how long he will have to spend behind bars.
Richard Sticklee, 59, who also has a history of fraud, was convicted on four counts of sexual assault in January, following a three-day trial in December 2022.
Sticklee appeared today (Aug 23) before Superior Court Judge Myrna Lack via video conference, where his official sentencing date was set.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, Oct. 13 during an in-person appearance at the Barrie courthouse.
Ontario Superior Justice Catriona Verner lifted the publication ban during the July 27 sentencing hearing, following the victim's request, which allowed media to report Sticklee's name.
During that hearing, Crown attorney Lindsay Weis, who is seeking a sentence of eight to nine years, pointed to a recent Supreme Court of Canada decision that emphasized sentences for sexual offences against children should be more severe.
Sticklee's history of fraud, Weis noted at the time, combined with his “prolonged, frequent abuse” of his stepdaughter, suggests that he has a sense of entitlement, simply taking what he wants despite its impact upon others.
