A Newmarket man has been charged with voyeurism at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

An employee had placed a camera inside a women's washroom at the Newmarket hospital, according to a source who did not want to be named.

York Regional Police confirmed officers were called to the hospital and an adult male from Newmarket was arrested. No further details were provided.

A person was taken into custody on Friday, Dec. 16 following an investigation at the hospital, said Danae Theakston, a spokesperson for Southlake.

She said, "The safety of everyone that works, receives care and visits Southlake is always our top priority."

"York Regional Police have assured us that there were not any immediate safety concerns for staff or patients. As this is an ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time. Southlake continues to work with the police and thanks them for keeping our communities safe," said Theakston.

A copy of a message sent to employees regarding the incident, which was provided to NewmarketToday, stated staff who worked in the area were informed at the time of the incident.
