In celebration of the Year of the Garden 2022, BWG’s Healthy Communities Committee and the Public Library & Cultural Centre are challenging community members to grow the biggest vegetable in one of five categories for bragging rights and prizes.

In the autumn, we will ask participants to show us their largest garden specimens. If this is something you are interested in participating in, it is best to start growing your giant vegetables now!

Competition categories include:

  • Pumpkin (weight)
  • Other squash (weight)
  • Root vegetable (weight)
  • Sunflower (diameter)
  • Grower’s choice - any large plant/vegetable specimen (judges discretion)

Stay tuned to the BWG Library website and social media for updates and tips for growing large vegetables and for the full event details. Don’t forget to check out the BWG Seed Library which offers residents open-pollinated seeds (especially large varieties such as Big Max Pumpkins and Mongolian Sunflowers). Seeds can be ordered through the BWG Library’s website: www.bradford.library.on.ca.
